Phil Hendrie does the stuff I didn't think you were allowed to do in radio (And to think I wasted all those years in radio talking over music!) Even those who are regularly offended by Phil have to admit that he's not your average talk show host. In fact, he's NOT a talk show host. If you understand that, you're on your way to understanding his genius. He's called a "Talk Show" host out of lack of any other place to put him. He's no Doctor, he may have an opinion, but he won't RUSH it down your throat. Though to some, his concept may seem alien. There are lots of "stars" out there, but Phil is one of the few radio big shots I would purely enjoy meeting and be able to get past the "Hey, love your show...". In some respects, he's a modern version of old time radio. Remember Fiber McGee & Molly's closet? Phil uses that concept in a purely modern style of "Theatre of the mind". He spends three hours a night painting a picture of contemporary society for us, satirizing the very business he is in. ( It's about time, right?) Phil interviews outrageous 'guests' and takes phone calls based on listener reaction. (I know, still sounds like a regular talk show, doesn't it). You know that soccer mom who lives in that snobbish 'gated community' who always has a strong opinion entirely out of touch with reality?? Phil knows her, and her name is Bobbie Dooley. The most fascinating thing about Phil's show isn't the fact that people like Bobbie are frequent guests, it's the fact that Phil IS Bobbie. He does all of the voices of the characters (the irate calls are real though!). How does he do it? In Talk Radio, there are Listeners, and there are Callers. Listeners are rarely callers, and after hearing Phil, you'll realize that callers don't listen! They're too busy to chant the talk show pledge of allegiance that begins, "Long time listener, first time caller..." Phil isn't always "funny". Usually an hour of his program is set aside for reflection of the news of the day and what's going on with Phil. He also takes a few calls from listeners. Still, his insight and intelligence is far above the rhetoric from Rush Limbaugh or antagonism from Michael Savage. For a guy who is fed up with the media, he sure has found an exclusive place for himself in it. I'd start my own site, but he's working hard on getting his own site up, and it's loaded with everything you need to become addicted. Plus, it wouldn't be fair to steal his intellectual property and it wouldn't be long before I was asked by Premiere Radio Networks to take it down. That's not the way I want to meet Craig Kitchin. If you need a sample, I'll let you listen in on my backstage pass when you come over to see the new house! Check Out Phil Hendrie Show Official Website
